Before You Book – Important Alloy Wheel Refurbishment Information
Before You Book – Important Alloy Wheel Refurbishment Information
Essex Powder Coating Ltd
At Essex Powder Coating Ltd, we take great pride in the quality of our work. As a family-run business, our aim is to provide every customer with a professional, high-quality alloy wheel refurbishment service.
We use a thorough preparation and powder coating process to achieve a durable, attractive finish.
However, every set of alloy wheels arrives in a different condition. We believe it’s important that customers understand what can realistically be achieved before booking their refurbishment.
1. Corrosion, Oxidation & Pitting
Alloy wheels can suffer from corrosion over time, particularly when exposed to road salt, moisture and general wear.
When the original coating is chemically stripped away, corrosion can reveal small holes, pits and imperfections in the aluminium.
Our preparation process includes chemical stripping, sandblasting and appropriate surface preparation before powder coating.
While this process removes existing coatings and surface contamination, it cannot always eliminate deep corrosion damage within the aluminium itself.
Please be aware:
- Deep corrosion may leave visible pitting beneath the new finish.
- Certain colours, particularly bright silver and high-gloss finishes, can highlight underlying imperfections.
- Additional preparation or primer coats may improve the appearance but cannot always achieve a perfectly smooth surface.
- Existing porosity or contamination may sometimes cause pinholes, bubbling or other surface imperfections during heating and curing.
We always aim to achieve the best possible finish, but heavily corroded wheels cannot always be restored to a completely factory-new appearance.
2. Previous Repairs & Welding
Some alloy wheels may have previously suffered cracks, buckles, welding repairs or other damage.
Previous repairs can affect the condition and appearance of the aluminium and may only become apparent once the original coating has been removed.
Where welding or straightening is required, we will assess the wheel and advise whether a repair is appropriate.
Important: Cracks involving spokes or other structurally critical areas can compromise wheel safety. We do not guarantee repairs to cracked spokes, and wheels with unsafe structural damage may be refused for repair or refurbishment.
Any repair we undertake will be subject to an assessment of its suitability and safety.
3. Surface Finish & Cosmetic Expectations
Powder coating provides a durable, attractive finish and can dramatically improve the appearance of alloy wheels.
However, refurbishment is not the same as manufacturing a new wheel.
Existing imperfections, corrosion damage, previous repairs and the condition of the underlying aluminium can influence the final result.
Although we take considerable care during preparation and coating, some pre-existing surface defects may remain visible.
We encourage customers seeking a flawless, factory-new finish to discuss their expectations with us before booking.
4. Our Refurbishment Process
We follow a comprehensive refurbishment process designed to achieve a high standard of preparation and finish.
Depending on the wheel’s condition and the work required, this includes:
- Initial inspection and assessment
- Tyre removal where applicable
- Chemical stripping of existing coatings
- Sandblasting and surface preparation
- Inspection for corrosion, cracks and other damage
- Additional preparation where appropriate
- Primer application where required
- Powder coating in the chosen finish
- Controlled oven curing
- Final inspection
- Tyre refitting and balancing where included in the service
We believe proper preparation is one of the most important parts of achieving a quality refurbishment.
5. Hidden Damage Discovered During Refurbishment
Some problems are not visible until the original paint or powder coating has been removed.
If we discover significant corrosion, cracking or damage that could affect the safety or suitability of a wheel, we may need to stop work and discuss the available options with the customer.
Additional repairs or preparation may involve extra costs, which will be discussed before proceeding.
In some circumstances, replacement of the wheel may be safer or more appropriate than refurbishment.
6. Our Workmanship Commitment
We stand behind the quality of our workmanship and aim to provide a finish that our customers can be proud of.
If a customer has concerns about work we have carried out, we encourage them to contact us so we can inspect the wheels and investigate the issue.
Where a problem is caused by defective workmanship, we will take appropriate steps to put matters right in accordance with the customer’s statutory rights.
However, pre-existing corrosion, pitting or damage to the aluminium may limit the cosmetic result achievable, even when the refurbishment has been carried out correctly.
These limitations will be considered when assessing the condition of the wheel and the agreed refurbishment work.
7. Before Confirming Your Booking
We ask all customers to consider the existing condition of their wheels and discuss any concerns with us before refurbishment.
Please let us know if your wheels have:
- Heavy corrosion or peeling lacquer
- Deep pitting or previous surface damage
- Known cracks, buckles or previous welding repairs
- Previously been refurbished or repaired
- Any particular finish requirements or cosmetic expectations
Our team will be happy to discuss the available options and advise on what may realistically be achieved.
Our Promise
At Essex Powder Coating Ltd, we believe in honest advice, careful preparation and quality workmanship.
We would always rather explain a potential limitation before carrying out a job than leave a customer disappointed afterwards.
